Ariella is, first and foremost, self-confident in her skills, and doesn't doubt herself as much as she probably should. When it comes to doubts, they tend to be more along the lines of her wondering whether her identity as a woman has been discovered. She tends to obsess over things, striving for perfection in everything she does. If she is having trouble getting better, than she tends to drop it and leave it, whatever 'it' may be. However, this perfectionism leads to impeccable talents. This confidence falters when she is asked a personal question, though. Stories of the past are altered to fit her appearance as a young man, causing them to be short and stuttered. She is quite secretive, as this isn't her only secret. Her Zaltana bloodline has left her with magic skills, which, while she stays in Ixia, she must hide. Yet another reason to keep her past life secret.

Ariella was born in Zaltana Clan, and grew up there. Her mother knew poisons well, and taught her young daughter everything she knew. As Ari got older, her mother allowed her to sample poisons. She learnt to recognize them as a food taster was, but not quite so obviously. She also slowly got her body used to small doses of the weaker poisons, slowly working the amount taken higher and higher. She is immune to some. The stronger ones she knows of, but they would kill her in too small amounts for her body to become accustomed to them.
Her parents were murdered by a rogue magician when Ari was sixteen and away from home. She had been learning basic swordsmanship with a scimitar, and when she returned home to find only bodies, she packed up her things and ran, making sure to bring the poisons with her. She mastered teh scimitar quite quickly, practising often to keep her mind off the death of her parents.
People in Sitia, though, weren't taking her seriously, despite her skill, and refused to teach her about otehr weapons. She disguised herself as a boy, and soon began learning the art of the short sword. During her travels in Sitia, she often laced her blades with poison. It was a trademark, one that she still uses outside of practise. She also discovered her magic, practising with magicians here and there to learn control, and trying to stay under the radar of any magician with skill enough to know her lies with a simple conversation.
It eventually became too much to disguise her identity from magicians, so she went up to Ixia and managed to get a place in the military there. Magicians were killed, so she had to hide her power, but there were no otehr magicians there to rat her out, either, so it actually ended up lifting a load off her shoulders. She liked her look and never changed it, and people continued to think of her as a boy growing into a man. She just kept up the ruse. She soon came to live in the Commander's barracks, in MD-6. Every believes her name to be Ari, and knows nothing of her magic, either. She intends to keep it that way, but secrets won't stay secrets forever.
