___________________________ ------------------- A R I E L L A // -- steady hands, just take the wheel ------- and every glance is killing me ------- time to make one last appeal ______________ _ for the life i lead The soft breeze gusted almost inaudibly, the only sound the rustling of the leaves as it passed through. A soft smile lighted onto the brunette's lips as the two bits of hair she left long tickled her neck. Her gray-blue eyes were closed, and her plain, but well cared for, short sword had it's tip resting on the ground. It was just heavy enough to dig into the soft earth, but not very deep.
She blinked her eyes open, taking in the bright greens and the dappled sunlight. It was cool out, considering it was the middle of the hot season. The Fire Festival would be arriving fairly soon in MD-6, where she was stationed. She stepped out of the shade, glancing over proudly at the red accents on her uniform that said she worked directly for the Commander of Ixia, and then began a kata, holding each position longer than she should have to work her muscles. Tone them a little more.
It didn't take any thought, so her mind delved back into thoughts of other things. She replayed the past few days in her head, rechecking events to see if she had given anything away, both that she was Sitian, and that she was actually female. She couldn't think of anything, but no one remembered everything. She ended her kata and slipped her sword into it's sheath. Happy, she ran her fingers through her hair and turned to head back to the barracks at the castle. Her hand drifted back to the sword hilt as she heard the crack of a twig and the brushing of leaves of fabric. She reached her mind out, only to have her magic sense a person approaching. She didn't dare delve farther, not wanting to be discovered as a magician.
I know you're there. Come out.
She tried to keep her voice calm, and collected, but she was more of a newbie, she just happened to have talent with her weapon. That was the only reason she was in this district. This didn't mean she was confident enough in her skills to be entirely calm when she couldn't see her opponent.

Thay had been out absentmindedly walking, not caring where she went, where she was. She gave a small sigh as she stuck to the shadows, tucking any loose strands of hair behind her ears. She had left her brother tending to the animals, and had slipped out of the watchful eye of everyone around her, trying to keep her safe. She hadn't been feeling herself lately, and wanted to try and cheer herself up. As she had started walking, her mind switched off, thinking back to happier days, to memories that meant so much to her.
When she came out of her reverie, she wasn't exactly sure where she was. Her unconsciousness had made sure she had kept to the shadows, keeping her as inconspicuous as possible. She stopped and looked about her, trying to work out where her body had led her. She was still under the canopy of the tree's, so guessed she was still in the snake forest. She gave another small sigh as she leant back against the rough bark of a nearby tree. She felt nervous and vulnerable not knowing where she was, knowing that is could be risky beig where ever she was. She decided the safest option would be to head back. She had to take Aggro out anyway. She turned and went to head back in the direction where she came from, but managed to trip over a nearby tree root.
She landed with a thump on the floor, breaking a twig in the leaf laden undergrowth. She cussed under breath, rubbing her wrists as she sat where she had fallen. As the voice came to her ears she froze. She kept silent and as still as she could, not wanting to make any more noise, to give her away. Hopefully whoever it was would just think they imagined it, ignoring it and going back to what they were doing before hand.

___________________________ ------------------- A R I E L L A // -- steady hands, just take the wheel ------- and every glance is killing me ------- time to make one last appeal ______________ _ for the life i lead Ari frowned slightly as nothing happened. She hadn't imagined it--Her senses told her that much. Nervous, she reached out again with her mind and located the person. She very lightly probed the mind, and tight lipped smile came to her lips. She couldn't get angry and turn the person in for being in Ixia and being magic. She was doing the same herself. However, through the fact that this likely wasn't an Ixian, she relaxed a bit more.
I may not be able to see you, but your presence isn't hard to miss, I'm afraid.
She sent out the message to the other's mind, letting whoever it was know she knew she hadn't imagined it. She headed in the general direction that the other magician was in, handing coming off her sword's hilt as she moved the leaves away, peering around for this unknown person. Figuring she was getting closer, she switched back to vocals.
Look, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm hiding my magic in Ixia, just like you...should be, or are, I'm not sure which...
She trailed off, trying to keep her voice a little lower than it normally was. It was complicated, pretending ot be a guy, but even if she wanted to stop, she couldn't. It was just too natural now, this pretending.

Thay continued to stay as still as possible, she knew that if she were in any danger, that she wouldn't be able to get up quick enough and run. She would only end up tripping and falling falt on her face. Yet again. She scowled as she got the message. She felt threatened and not threatend at the same time. She did know it was a pathetic attempt at hiding, but it was just an automatic reaction. She couldn't help it. She had learnt to freeze, as that way, she may escape the danger. She gave a small sigh in her mind, knowing that it was hopeless now if she were in any danger. She was caught.
As she heard the person moving towards her, she turned her head, trying to see who was her finder. She could hear her heart beating louldy in her chest, rising to her throat. She gave a small gulp, moving her hands near her knees, so she could push herself up quickly if need be.
As the person's words reached her ears, she relaxed slightly, but knowing that this could be a lie, she stayed still, silent, and slightly tense. She wasn't sure whether she shoud trust this person, whether she should move. Not sure of what to do, she remained frozen to the spot.

___________________________ ------------------- A R I E L L A // -- steady hands, just take the wheel ------- and every glance is killing me ------- time to make one last appeal ______________ _ for the life i lead Finally, Ari moved one branch and glanced down, seeing the younger girl and she smiled slightly, stepping past the branch and crouching down in front of her. She looked back, moving the tip of her sword sheath back so that it wasn't presing awkwardly and uncomfortably into her side.
There you are. See, if you hadn't hidden, I probably would have just walked away after you came out. But, I'm a curious person.
She placed her elbows on her knees, the insides of her wrists together, and her palms facing to the sky. She settled her chin in them, and smiled, tipping her head slightly to the side as she tried to read the personality of the girl from her face. But, she wasn't all that great at reading facial features. She rocked back on her heels a bit more, and placed her left hand lightly on the ground for support, offering her right hand for a handshake. Her mouth spread into a grin.
I'm Ari. Ari Zaltana. Though, I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell any other Ixians that I'm from Sitia. Being hanged isn't on my to-do list in life.

Thay locked her eyes onto the person as they came into view. She could see that this person looked male, and seemed it, but there was something that just didn't seem right about them. She felt her heart beat faster again as they came close. As they crouched down in front of her, she quickly looked them over, eyeing up the sword. She was weaponless herself for once. She gave a small half grimace, half smile.
"I wasn't intentionally hiding you know. I fell. Then I panicked, and stayed where I was. Where I still am."
She watched this person intently, trying to figure out who they truly were, confused at how they were reacting with her. Hearing their words it made more sense. She raised an eyebrow, glancing over them again, confused at why they were hiding their true self. She took their hand lightly, their skin slightly warmer than hers. She smiled back at the grin on their face.
"Nice to meet you Ari. I'm Thajra Mahina. Thay for short. And I won't tell anyone. Promise."
She gave another smile, and brushed the hair from her face, glancing about her, feeling more relaxed yet still tense for some reason she could not place her finger on.

Ari replied, still grinning. She was, quite obviously, talking about why Thajra had stayed put. It was to be expected, as it was a natural instinct for other animals. Humans were, in general emotion and often instinct, nothing more than animals. She knew this, and so, after their handshake, she pushed herself back up to a standing position, more than willing to leave the other girl alone, if she wanted it.
I suppose I'll leave you be, though. Or do you need some help? I've got the afternoon for private training, so none of the soldiers will be looking for me.

Thay gave a small smile hearing their words. She was glad that her panic hadn't gotten her into trouble, like it would often do. Actually, panic didn't really need to help with anything. Thay was just a magnet to trouble.
As they pushed themselves to the ground, Thay eyed up the sword, still feeling slightly on edge. This was mainly due to the fact that she had no idea where she was. Except from in a wood or forest. She sat, watching the person speak, trying to think of where she could be. As she heard the mention of leaving, she felt a slight pang of panic. This was the only person she could trust. And they were just going to leave her? She furrowed her brow as she stood up herself, rubbing her wrists slightly as they stung.
"Don't go. Um. Could you tell me where I am?"
She tried to give a smile, but it didn't really come out, she was wondering why it was such a strong feeling for this person not to leave her. She didn't want to be alone any more, not like this morning. She wanted the company. She just stared at Ari in front of her.

___________________________ ------------------- A R I E L L A // -- steady hands, just take the wheel ------- and every glance is killing me ------- time to make one last appeal ______________ _ for the life i lead Ari smiled, almost happy that Thay had asked her to stay. She liked making friends, and she wasn't going to pass up this opportunity, now that it presented itself so openly.
Oh, you're in Military District Six. You get lost or something?
She backed up a few steps, not at all because she was nervous or afraid of the other girl. No, there just happened to be a convenient tree placed a few steps back which she planned to lean against.
-muse block, sorry-

Thay smiled slightly at the mention of getting lost. She looked to the side, deeper into the forest, grimacing slightly at the thought of the punishment from wandering off. She looked back to Ari and shook her head slightly; the loose strands of hair falling across her face once more. She grumbled and brushed them back, pulling a thin red ribbon from her waistband and trying her hair into a rough pony, not wanting it to bother her again. She smiled again at Ari.
”Thanks. Um… Not lost exactly. I wandered off, started daydreaming, and ended up here.”
She held her arms out at the word here, looking about her, stating that this was the place she had ended up at. She gave a small nervous laugh and placed her arms behind her back, fiddling with a small bracelet on her wrist, watching Ari lean up against a tree. She couldn’t work this person out. She pulled her brows slightly together, stepping forward slightly, her eyes flickering to the sword as she spoke.
”Shouldn’t you be doing something? Rather than talking to me?”
She tilted her head slightly, looking at Ari’s face, studying it. She followed the lines of his cheeks, looked carefully at the different colours of his eyes, not being able to see them all, as she wasn’t really that close, but still being able to tell some different shades apart. She gave a small smile, tilting her head the other direction, before stepping back and looking about her once more.
[OOC – That’s fine. ^^ I had that for a while, but not having a laptop or music for a weekend really makes your brain work hard. XD]

Well, maybe she should be, but that didn't mean she was. Nor did she really care. She'd made it to the Commander's service on a hell of a lot more than good looks. She could deal with a little but of time off. She didn't need to practise twenty-four/seven.
Nah. And it's not like they'll know. No magic means no mind readers, too. Very useful sometimes.
It was obvious she was a bit careless, but she didn't mind that. She smiled slightly as she noticed Thay trying to figure out what was different about her, and she knew then that she'd passed as a boy again. Of course, Thay had looked longer than most. She suspected something was different. Ariella didn't think she know quite how different, though. And that's exactly the way she wanted it.

Thay smiled slightly as she saw him thinking over what she said. She gave a small chuckle at the words from his mouth, wondering what Ari should be doing. She slumped down to the floor again, nodding slightly, agreeing with the no magic, even though she wasn’t really aware of it much herself, as she grew up around the magic, and was always in the company of someone with magical powers. As she reached the tree’s roots, she moved slightly, making sure she was more comfy, and looked back up to Ari.
Thay stared a little while longer at Ari’s face, before sighing and looking away, not sure what was making her so sure something was different. She was sure Ari was aware of her looking, and blushed slightly, wondering how Ari would take this, as it was quite rude of her, but she didn’t care all that much, it was how she was.
She turned her head, eye knotted together, to look back at Ari. After a few moments of looking him all over, she sighed in defeat again, and looked away, slightly annoyed with herself for not seeing him for what he really was.

___________________________ ------------------- A R I E L L A // -- steady hands, just take the wheel ------- and every glance is killing me ------- time to make one last appeal ______________ _ for the life i lead For a little while, Ari seemed to be simply inspecting a dagger she had pulled out of a pocket. In truth, she was peering through her eyelashes, watching Thay watching her. It was a hardly noticeable act, and she had done it often to spy on someone while she seemed to be looking away. It was an undeniably useful thing.
Finally, after noting the perfect blade one to many times, she slid it away and looked straight at Thay, an amused smile on her face.
If you have a question, you can ask you know. I don't mind at all.

Thay sat, looking away from Ari, but still keeping an eye on him, looking at the dagger, from the corner of her eye. She was slightly dubious of having two weapons present on this person, and not knowing fully who he was. It wouldn’t usually bother her as much, but right now, she didn’t feel completely safe, and being in the company of an armed stranger, while she had no protection her self, was making her senses stay on full alert, ready for if anything were to happen. She was pretty sure nothing would. But just on the safe side, she didn’t try and relax as much as she normally would.
She looked up as he spoke, and smiled nervously, before looking away, shaking her head slightly, trying not to seem so shocked that she had been caught staring. She hadn’t tried to hide it, when maybe it would have been wise to. She looked back to Ari, mulling over what she could say, to ask. She didn’t want to be rude. Her face wrinkled and contorted as she screwed it up, thinking hard. Eventually she came to a conclusion.
”Who are you?”
She knew it was vague. Yes. But she figured that Ari was a smart person, and may realise the depth of her question, rather than taking it upon himself to tell her she was stupid, and that he was Ari. She would only just roll her eyes, and tell him he was stupid, and he knew what she meant. She also hoped it didn’t seem too rude for her to ask. Or personal. After all, they had only just met. She gave a small smile, to show that she was being friendly, and not invasive in any way.

She replied, her smile only faintly there, to the point where the shadows hid it. She blinked once, staring at Thay to make sure she caught every single reaction. Especially when it came to the last part of her statement.
And before you complain, I did answer you're question. I just replied in a riddle.
And she was telling the truth. She seemed like a boy, but she wasn't. So, she truly wasn't what she seemed. There was just many other things that phrase could be referring to.
